Gerard Arthur Way (born April 9, 1977 in Belleville , New Jersey ) is an American musician and comic book writer. He is the singer and founder of the band My Chemical Romance , which split up in March 2013 and reunited on October 31, 2019. His first solo album, Hesitant Alien , was released on September 29, 2014 in the US and on September 30 worldwide. He has also written the comic series The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and The Umbrella Academy . The latter was filmed by Netflix.

Life

Gerard was born on April 9, 1977 in Summit, New Jersey . His mother, Donna Culluci, is of Italian descent and his father, Donald, of Scottish descent. Gerard Way grew up with them and his younger brother Mikey in a crime-ridden neighborhood in New Jersey. In addition, he began drawing comics at an early age . Way later thought of making it a career. After graduating from high school in 1995 , he studied at the School of Visual Arts , which he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999 .

After he had his first stage experience in a school performance in the lead role of " Peter Pan ", his grandmother, convinced of his acting talent, supported him with singing lessons. He soon lost interest. During their time in high school, Gerard Way played as a singer and his brother Mikey, as a bass player, in the band Raygun Jones .

On September 3, 2007, he married Lyn-Z , bassist for Mindless Self Indulgence , after performing at the Coors Amphitheater in Colorado . Their first child, Bandit Lee Way, was born on May 27, 2009.

comics

Until 2001, Gerard Way worked in the comic industry in New York trying to sell his self-developed cartoon series The Breakfast Monkey to Cartoon Network . In The Breakfast Monkey is about a little monkey, which is able, waffles, French toast to let and other breakfast appear out of nowhere. Together with his loyal companions Crazy Boy and Tinkle Fish, he has made it his business to fight the evil in Mod City and to spread good breakfast and happiness everywhere. Cartoon Networks declined this, however, as it happened to have some similarities with the cartoon series Aqua Teen Hunger Force . Gerard Way was unlucky in his job, began to drink and his already longstanding depression worsened.

From 2007 to February 2008 he completed his six-book comic series The Umbrella Academy . He collaborated with the Brazilian artist Gabriel Ba, where he was responsible as an author. The award-winning artist Dave Stewart took on the coloring. This parody of conspiracy comics was, according to him, a major inspiration for the album The Black Parade . The protagonists are the superpowered children of the late Sir Reginald Hargreeves. (According to Way, Hargreeves was "a renowned scientist and inventor, intrepid adventurer, successful entrepreneur, master of cricket and incognito living alien".) The aim of the quarreling descendants is to stop the "Orchestra Damned" (sic!) That ruled the world want to destroy through music. Gerard Way received the Eisner Award for The Umbrella Academy . The Umbrella Academy is published by Dark Horse. The comic is published in German by Cross Cult Verlag. On the Internet you could read two short stories about The Umbrella Academy on MySpace , Safe & Sound and Anywhere But Here . The sequel, also a six- issue miniseries, The Umbrella Academy - Dallas has also been released by Dark Horse. Due to the international success (including several awards with the Eisner Award), a real film is currently being planned. Gerard Way is working on the storyboard. The screenplay is written by Mark Bomback , who u. a. contributed to the film Constantine and Disney's The Hunt for the Magic Mountain . The film was announced for 2011/2012.

Together with comic book writer Shaun Simon and cartoonist Becky Cloonan, Way created the six-part miniseries The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys in 2013 , which continues the story of the characters from the concept album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys .

In April 2016, DC Comics announced the creation of a new imprint called Young Animal , which Gerard Way will oversee and whose stories are aimed specifically at adult readers, but take place in the regular DC universe . Way will also co-author or co-author three series of the imprint: Doom Patrol , Mother Panic, and Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye .

The series adaptation of his comic series The Umbrella Academy was released on Netflix in January 2019 . Way and Gabriel Bá co-produced the film. Steve Blackman ( Fargo ) acted as the showrunner. The first season of the series comprises a total of ten episodes.

Music career

The terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001 made him see his life differently. He experienced the attacks up close. He is said to have had the feeling that he had to do something with his life because he couldn't reach anyone with drawing comics. He called some old friends he'd lost sight of and formed a band with them. Gerard's younger brother Mikey Way also took a liking to it, and even dropped out of college for it. The band owes its name to him: My Chemical Romance .

Skylines And Turnstiles is based on Gerard's September 11th. It is his first self-written song and is included on the 2002 album I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love , which was recorded within just two weeks. The first world tour followed shortly afterwards.

During the Warped Tour in 2003, Gerard Way got alcohol and drug problems, which got worse and the band thought about breaking off the tour and supposedly driven him to suicidal thoughts. When everything threatened to escalate, he spoke to the tour manager and enlisted the help of a therapist. He's been clean since August 2004.

Together with his bandmates, Gerard released other albums in the following years, such as “Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge”, by far the most successful and award-winning concept album “The Black Parade” and “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys”, which served as the basis for a later published comic book Ways.

On March 22, 2013, the band finally announced their breakup via a social media post. In 2014 a favorite album with a new song ("Fake your death") was released, but after that there was hardly any news from the group.

It wasn't until October 31, 2019 that a reunion was announced in the form of a concert on December 20, 2019 in Los Angeles.

other projects

Way was a guest on the 2005 Every-Time-I-Die album Gutter Phenomenon . In 2006 he took part in the recording of Head Automaticas Popaganda . This year he also wrote the foreword to the CD Where's Neil When You Need Him , a compilation of songs related to the works of British author Neil Gaiman , in which Tori Amos and Deine Lakaien were among others .

Gerard Way also took part in the ending of the Special Edition of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children with the song "Safe and Sound" in cooperation with Kyōsuke Himuro .

On August 14, 2012 Deadmau5 released the single " Professional Griefers " in collaboration with Gerard Way , which is also on the album Title Goes Here .

There is also a solo release that has been on Soundcloud since December 2012 and is entitled "Zero Zero". In July 2013, Way announced that he was working on another song entitled "Millions". This was presented for the first time in October at the Sydney Opera House .

On October 26th, 2018 Way released another solo project "Baby you're a haunted house".

First solo album

On September 29, 2014, Gerard released his first solo album entitled Hesitant Alien on Warner Bros. Records, Reprise Records. The album was recorded at Lightning Sound Studio in California and produced by Doug McKean. This album was mixed by Tchad Blake, who has also managed the sound for Tom Waits, Arctic Monkeys and other musicians. On this album, Gerard could also use his favorite pedal, the Big Muff Fuzz pedal. The pedal can also be seen on the back of the album. The CD was announced on May 24th 2014, on June 11th Gerard announced the beginning of his solo career with the release of the pre-release single "Action Cat", this was accompanied by a new website with concept artwork for the album and a new logo.
