history

The area around Summit was bought from the Native American Indians on October 28, 1664. The first settlers from Europe came to the area around 1710. Originally the place was called "Pie Hill", later "Beacon Hill" and until the end of the 19th century "Heights over Springfield". The current name (summit = English summit) is probably derived from the location of the place on the Watchung Mountains. In 1837 the place got connection to the Morris and Essex Railway. In 1869 the communities of Summit and New Providence were separated, and the current status ("City of Summit") was declared on April 11, 1899.

In the 19th century, Summit served as a recreational area for wealthy New Yorkers. After arriving by train, the weekends were often spent in large grand hotels or smaller guest houses. After the Second World War , the city experienced a major construction boom, as it was now natural to commute to New York for work. It was around this time that Summit began to take on the suburban character of tree-lined streets and suburban single-family homes it is known for today. So Summit was able to escape the shabby and crime-laden atmosphere that prevails in many other cities in New Jersey, and is now the wealthiest city in the state.

The 1741 Carter House (Butler Parkway No. 90) is Summit's oldest surviving structure and is now the seat of the Summit Historical Society.

politics

Organs of the city administration are the city council, mayor and city director. The mayor is elected for four years and is the official representative of the city and first elected official. He appoints various officials such as the police chief and the school administration board.

The governing body within the city administration is the city council. It enacts the laws and approves the budget. It consists of seven members, namely three from each of the city districts I and II and one member elected in both city districts. This serves for two, the other six members for three years. The assembly elects a chairman and a pro-tem chairman, who is also the deputy mayor, from among its members for a period of one year.

For years, Summit was considered a Republican stronghold . Few Democrats ran for election between 1921 and 2001 , and not a single one held an election. In 2001, however, two Democrats were elected to the city council and Jordan Glett was elected mayor by the 2003 Democrats.
