The Schering-Plow Corporation was a global pharmaceutical company from the United States with headquarters in Kenilworth , New Jersey . The company was listed in the S&P 500 share index. Schering-Plow was formed in 1971 by merger of Schering Corporation and Plow Inc . The Schering Corporation emerged in 1941 from the US branch of Schering AG after expropriation by the US government. The Schering property was under government administration until 1952 and was then privatized. The German Schering AG also lost the rights to its own name in North America. The company was acquired by MSD Sharp & Dohme / Merck & Co., Inc. on November 3, 2009 for $ 41 billion.

Schering-Plow in German-speaking countries

In Germany, Schering-Plow was represented by the subsidiaries Essex Pharma GmbH and essex tierarznei , both based in Munich - Neuperlach . Essex Pharma was created in 1983 by taking over the Byk-essex , a joint venture of Schering Corporation and Byk Gulden . essex tierarznei was established in 1991 from the spin-off of the veterinary business from Byk Gulden.

Essex Pharma employed around 1,000 people in Germany alone.

The Schering-Plow Corporation bore the name “Essex Pharma” in the German-speaking area in order to avoid confusion with Bayer Schering AG, with which they shared roots but no longer had any connection.

The Austrian subsidiary was AESCA Pharma Ges.mbH in Traiskirchen , the Swiss subsidiary is Essex Chemie AG in Lucerne .

Both subsidiaries now also operate under the MSD brand .

Medicines / areas of indication

Essex Pharma sold prescription drugs, over-the-counter health products, and veterinary drugs. The main focus was on life-threatening and chronic diseases, namely in the following areas:

Allergology, dermatology, pulmonology, treatment of cardiovascular / metabolic diseases, infectiology, oncology, immunology / rheumatology, hepatology and therapy of opioid addiction.

Indication areas were u. a .: Allergy , asthma , hepatitis , hay fever , cancer , Crohn's disease , mycosis , psoriasis and rheumatism (rheumatoid arthritis). The purchase of the pharmaceutical company Organon in 2008 added the following therapeutic areas: contraception ( birth control ), hormone replacement therapy (HRT), fertility ( fertility ), central nervous system and anesthesia .

The most important products in Germany were: AERIUS® ( desloratadine ), ASMANEX® (mometasone), CAELYX® (pegylated liposomal doxorubicin ), Cerazette® ( desogestrel ), ECURAL® (mometason), Esmeron® ( rocuronium bromide ), ETHYOL )® (amifostin) EZETROL® ( ezetimibe ), Implanon® ( etonogestrel implant ), INEGY® (ezetimibe and simvastatin ), IntronA® ( interferon alfa-2b), KEIMAX® ( Ceftibuten ), Liviella® (tibolone), Lovelle® (desogestrel / ethinylestradiol ) , Marvelon® (desogestrel / ethinyl estradiol), NASONEX® (mometasone) NOXAFIL® ( posaconazole ), NuvaRing® (etonogestrel / ethinyl estradiol), Ovestin® ( estriol ), PEGINTRON (pegylated interferon alfa-2b), Puregon® ( follitropin beta ), REBETOL®, Remergil® ( mirtazapine ), REMICADE® ( infliximab ), SUBOXONE® ( buprenorphine hydrochloride with naloxone ), SUBUTEX® (buprenorphine) and TEMODAL® ( temozolomide ).

In 2007, Essex Pharma generated sales of almost € 300 million with human medicines.

Others

The company employed over 55,000 people (as of 2008).

On March 12, 2007, an agreement was reached on the sale of the Dutch company Organon to Schering-Plow, which was completed in 2008.

Merck & Co., Inc. announced on March 9, 2009 that it would take over the pharmaceutical company Schering-Plow for 41 billion US dollars. The merger was completed on November 3, 2009.
