Since meeting his teacher Hans Zender , Mark Moebius has been working on a “New Harmonics”. Unlike Hans Zender, however, he is not interested in an even greater subdivision of the twelve-tone octave chroma into a seventy-two octave plasma; instead, he tries to refine the hearing awareness for more distant overtone and sub-tone series of sounds. With this he cancels Schönberg 's verdict that higher-numbered overtones are only more distant dissonances that one simply has to emancipate to twelve-tone. Rather, he is concerned with a harmonious understanding of these higher-numbered overtones: precisely because they have their defined place, they do not have to be "liberated", but are constitutive for a generally revived understanding of harmony. That overtones are good not only to static compositions but may also carry scenic and dramatic architecture, proved Mark Moebius for his operas aurora , Idilia Dubb and pine nuts do not grow in bags . Recently, Moebius has been developing a kind of “fractal” composing by breaking down mostly simple elements (or “motifs”) into their constituent components (movement, rhythm, pitches, harmony, etc.) and subjecting them to a continuous mutation , which occurs through gradual change the musical parameter is caused.

The works of Mark Moebius appear in Edition Peters .
