Union County is a county in the state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 522,541 people and a population density of 1,953 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Elizabeth .

The county covers an area of 273 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Essex County , Hudson County , Middlesex County , Somerset County, and Morris County .

Three places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Baltusrol Golf Club , Boxwood Hall, and William Livingston House . A total of 70 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 522,541 people. There were 186,124 households and 133,264 families. The population density was 1,953 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.51% White, 20.78% African American, 0.23% Native American, 3.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, and 6.37% other races Groups; 3.25% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 19.71% of the population.

Of the 186,124 households, 34.00% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.60% were married couples living together, 14.20% were single mothers. 28.40% were not families. 23.60% are single households and 10.20% have someone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.28.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.90% residents under 18 years of age, 7.90% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.10% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.80% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.70 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 88.90 males.
