Atlantic County is a county in the US state of New Jersey . The county seat is Mays Landing .
history
The county was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe. After southern New Jersey had been explored by seafarers from various nations in the 16th century, Henry Hudson carried out further exploration in 1609. The first settlement was at Sommers Point, named after John Sommers, who was the overseer of the roads and the harbor was ordered by Great Egg Harbor . At first the area belonged to Gloucester County. In 1837, however, it was separated as an independent county and designated as the administrative seat of Mays Landing .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Atlantic City Convention Hall and Lucy, the Margate Elephant . 45 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 15, 2018).

The county had a population of 252,552 as of the 2000 census . There were 95,024 households and 63,190 families. The population density was 174 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.36% White, 17.63% African American, 0.26% Native American, 5.06% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 6.06% other races Groups; 2.58% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 12.17% of the population.
Of the 95,024 households, 31.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 46.50% were married couples living together, 14.80% were single mothers. 33.50% were not families. 27.00% were single households and 10.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.16.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.30% of residents under 18 years of age, 8.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.60% between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 13.60% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.60 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.20 males.
The median income for a household in the 43,933 USD , and the median income for a family was 51,710 USD. Males had a median income of $ 36,397 versus $ 28,059 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,034. 10.50% of the population and 7.60% of families are below the poverty line. 12.80% of them were under 18 years of age and 10.50% were 65 years of age or older.
