The county is located in southern New Jersey on Delaware Bay , the confluence of the Delaware River into the Atlantic . It has an area of 1752 square kilometers, of which 485 square kilometers are water surface. The following counties border Cumberland County:

Duke of Cumberland

Cumberland County was formed in 1748 from former parts of Salem County. It was named after Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721–1765), a member of the British royal family and military leader.
