Sussex County is a county in the state of New Jersey . At the 2000 census , the county had 144,166 people and a population density of 107 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Newton .

The county has an area of 1,388 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It borders clockwise to the following counties: Orange County ( New York ), Passaic County , Morris County , Warren County and Pike County ( Pennsylvania ).

According to the 2000 census , the county had 144,166 people. There were 50,831 households and 38,784 families. The population density was 107 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.73% White, 1.04% African American, 0.11% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.74% other races Groups; 1.14% from two or more races. 3.34% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 50,831 households, 39.90% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 65.00% were married couples living together, 8.00% were single mothers. 23.70% were not families. 18.90% were single households and 6.30% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.24.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 27.90% residents under 18 years of age, 6.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.30% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 98.00 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 95.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 65,266 , and the median income for a family is $ 73,335. Males had a median income of $ 50,395 versus $ 33,750 for females.
