history
Franklin was founded around 1600 as a mining settlement near the "Franklin Mine", also known as the "Franklin furnace". Since the area is over a very mineral-rich ore body , other mines and later smelters were operated in the Franklin area and near the Wallkill River . Mainly iron and zinc were mined and processed . In 1897 all of the mines around Franklin merged to form the New Jersey Zinc Company - later renamed the Horsehead Corporation - which became Franklin's largest employer and even attracted immigrants from Russia , Great Britain , Hungary and Poland . In 1966, the Horsehead Corporation became part of Gulf + Western (Gulf and Western Industries, Inc).
