Geographical location

Vernon is in northeast Sussex County. It borders New York State to the north and east . In addition to Wawayanda State Park, which is located in the northeast of Vernon, there is also the Hamburg Mountain Wildlife Management Area in the southeast and the Wallkill RiverNational Wildlife Refuge in the west. Several lakes are located in the area of ​​the township, such as Wawayanda Lake and Highland Lake in the east or Lake Wallkill and Lake Pochung in the west. In addition, several rivers and streams flow through Vernon. The western border to XX is the Wallkill River . The New Jersey State Route 94 runs from north to south centrally through the territory of Vernon.

Vernon Catholic Church

Vernon Township was founded on April 8, 1793 when the area was split off from Hardyston Township . The area received its statute as a township on February 21, 1798.

At first the township was sparsely populated. This changed with increasing infrastructure. In addition to restaurants, blacksmiths and wheelwrighters also settled on the main street, and there were several mills. The population was very religious and early on there were Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal and others congregations.

There are several mines in the Vernon area. Mining began in Vernon as early as 1793. Various minerals and ores are mined. Vernon experienced its first prime through mining. Miners moved to Vernon and a connection to the Sussex Railroad was also established.

The development of several ski areas brought more jobs to Vernon. In addition to the Mountain Creek Resort, there is the Vernon Valley Ski Area.

The Dorothy E. Henry Memorial Branch is part of the Sussex County Library System. It's located on Route 94 and is the township library.
