John Winans

John Winans (born September 27, 1831 in Vernon , Sussex County , New Jersey , †  January 17, 1907 in Janesville , Wisconsin ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1885 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1855, John Winans began working in his new profession in Janesville in 1857. There he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1861 he was elected to the Janesville Borough Council. Between 1865 and 1875 he was the legal representative of his new hometown. Between 1874 and 1891 he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly four times . In 1864 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago , where George B. McClellan was nominated as a presidential candidate. From 1874 to 1875 Winans served on the staff of Governor William R. Taylor .

Between 1885 and 1887 John Winans served as Mayor of Janesville. In the congressional election of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Charles G. Williams on March 4, 1883 . Since he refused to run again in 1884, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1885 . After leaving the US House of Representatives, John Winans returned to work as a lawyer. He died on January 17, 1907 in Janesville and was buried there.
