Peter V. Deuster

Peter Victor Deuster (born February 13, 1831 in Thum , † December 31, 1904 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA ) was a newspaper publisher, member of the House of Representatives of the United States and a member of the Democratic Party . He represented the state of Wisconsin in Congress .

After attending school in Nideggen and Düren , he traveled with his parents to America in 1847, where the family settled in "New Cöln" near Milwaukee. In the autumn of the same year he found employment in the German newspaper "Wisconsin Banner", which was published by Moritz Schöffler.

After four years he founded a German weekly paper, the "Hausfreund". Six months later he became managing director of the "Daily Seebote" in order to continue his newspaper work in 1854 as editor of the German newspaper in Port Washington . At the same time he held the posts of postmaster, court clerk and ran an evening school for young people.

Two years later, Deuster became a partner in the "Milwaukeer Seebote", of which he was the sole owner a few years later. Shortly thereafter, he was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly and, in 1870, the State Senate. During this time he published the "Chicago Daily Union" in Chicago , a democratic paper which he sold again in 1871.

In 1873 he was elected to the 46th Congress of the United States . He was also a member of the 47th and 48th Congresses . During this time he knew how to earn a respected position in the lower house of the national legislature, and carried out numerous domestic political innovations that were of far-reaching importance.

From February 19, 1896 to October 15, 1897 he was the American consul in Krefeld .
