James Powers "Jim" Moody (born September 2, 1935 in Richlands , Tazewell County , Virginia , † March 22, 2019 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 1993 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Moody attended the Anglo American High School in the Greek capital Athens until 1953 and then Haverford College in Haverford ( Pennsylvania ) until 1957 . He later studied at Harvard University until 1967 and then at the University of California at Berkeley until 1973 . In the meantime, he interrupted his studies to work on behalf of CARE International between 1958 and 1965 and later for the Peace Corps in Yugoslavia , Iran and Pakistan . Between 1967 and 1969 he worked for the federal government in the economic sector. From 1973 to 1976 he taught economics at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee .

Politically, Moody joined the Democratic Party . From 1977 to 1978 he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly ; between 1979 and 1982 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 1982 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Henry S. Reuss on January 3, 1983 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 .

In 1992, Moody decided not to run for the US House of Representatives again. Instead, he sought his party's nomination for the US Senate elections , which, however, went to Russ Feingold . He had already considered running for the Senate in 1988, but then renounced it in favor of Herb Kohl shortly before the application deadline . Between 1995 and 1998, Moody was Vice President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development . From 1998 to 2000 he headed the Association of International Development and Relief Organization . Since 2000 he has taught as a lecturer at the University of Maryland . Moody was also the founder of the National Security Archive.
