Haverford College

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Haverford College is a private college for the so-called liberal arts (liberal arts), the student receives both sexes. It is located in Haverford ( Pennsylvania ), a suburb outside of the city Philadelphia , and enjoys a reputation as one of the best colleges for the liberal arts in the United States .

Haverford is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, which gives students the opportunity to enroll in courses at Swarthmore College and Bryn Mawr College . Haverford's relations are particularly close with Bryn Mawr. The two colleges share a student newspaper and radio station, and many student activities are organized together. Haverford students also have the right to take courses at the University of Pennsylvania College of General Studies (CGS).

Members of the Quakers from Philadelphia and New York founded the college in 1833. This makes Haverford the oldest college in North America with Quaker origins. Although there is no longer an official religious affiliation today, Quaker philosophy still has a huge impact on campus life. Originally only for men, Haverford admitted the first female students in 1980. Today more than half of the students at Haverford are women. All of the current 1,168 students in the college are undergraduates .

In 1941/1942, Christopher Isherwood taught English to German refugees at Haverford College. Two of his students there were Hermann and Gretel Ebeling .
