Thomas Jefferson University is a private university in Philadelphia . The university consists of six colleges : Sidney Kimmel Medical College , Jefferson College of Biomedical Sciences , Jefferson College of Health Professions , Jefferson College of Nursing , Jefferson College of Pharmacy, and the Jefferson College of Population Health .
history
The university began in a medical school founded in the early 19th century by George McClellan and others. At that time, there were only four medical schools in the United States: Columbia University , University of Pennsylvania , Harvard University, and Dartmouth College .
McClellan's group applied for a medical school to be added to Jefferson College in Canonsburg in 1824 . The application was approved and Jefferson Medical College was established in Philadelphia with administrative and financial responsibility in the hands of the faculty. The first degrees could be taken in 1826 and twenty people were presented with their MD certificate on April 14, 1826 in the Tivoli Building . The Jefferson Medical College received an independent charter in 1838, separating from Jefferson College .
The Jefferson Medical College concept also included clinical instruction as an important part of education. For this reason, the Tivoli Theater , the school's first home, had rooms to receive patients. This concept of an outpatient clinic to treat patients with student involvement was introduced here for the first time in a medical school in the United States. Later there were collaborations with the Philadelphia Hospital and the Pennsylvania Hospital.
Soon there was insufficient space in the Tivoli Theater and in 1828 the Ely building was erected. There was also a lecture hall in the basement and an amphitheater for operations on the upper floor. In 1877, a hospital was built where clinical lectures and operations were held in the pit . This hospital was the second hospital in the United States to be affiliated with a medical school. It had an amphitheater with 700 seats, was able to accept 441 inpatients and treated 4659 outpatients in the first year of operation.
In 1841, Jefferson Medical College was teaching some of the greatest professors of the time. Among them were John K. Mitchell , Robley Dunglison , Joseph Pancoast , Thomas D. Mothers , Charles D. Meigs , Franklin Bache, and Robert Huston . With Samuel D. Gross returned in 1856 a graduate of the year 1828 at the Jefferson Medical College back, who had acquired a reputation as a pathological anatomist and surgeon in the meantime.
The Thomas Jefferson University was founded in the 1969th She established the new charter for the university together with its components: the Jefferson Medical College , the College of Allied Health Sciences (now the College of Health Professions ), the College of Graduate Studies and the Jefferson Medical College Hospital .
In January 2007, the University sold the painting The Gross Clinic by Thomas Eakins for 68 million US dollars to the Philadelphia Museum of Art , which together with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts acquired.
In May 2017, the university announced that it would merge with Philadelphia University . The name of the university will continue to be Thomas Jefferson University .
