John W. Byrnes (1956)

John William Byrnes (born June 12, 1913 in Green Bay , Wisconsin , †  January 12, 1985 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1973 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Byrnes attended the public schools of his home country and studied until 1936 at the University of Wisconsin – Madison . After a subsequent law degree at the same university and his admission as a lawyer in 1938, he began to work in Green Bay in his new profession. Between 1938 and 1940 he also served as assistant banking officer for the state government of Wisconsin.

Politically, Byrnes was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1940 and 1944 he was a member of the Wisconsin Senate . In 1943 he headed the Republican faction there. In the 1944 congressional elections , he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of Wisconsin , where he succeeded Democrat LaVern Dilweg on January 3, 1945 . After 13 re-elections he was able to complete a total of 14 consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . World War II ended in his first term in Congress . During his 28 years in the US House of Representatives, he was a contemporary witness of all domestic and foreign policy events of the time, including the Korean War , the civil rights movement , the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. During this time the 22nd , 23rd , 24th , 25th and 26th amendments to the Constitution were passed.

1972 John Byrnes renounced another candidacy. In the following years he worked as a lawyer in the federal capital Washington. He lived in neighboring Arlington, where he died on January 12, 1985.
