Joseph Rankin

Joseph Rankin (born September 25, 1833 in Passaic , New Jersey , †  January 24, 1886 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1883 and 1886 he represented the state of Wisconsin in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good primary education, Joseph Rankin moved to Mishicot , Wisconsin in 1854 , where he worked in commerce. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1859 he became a member of the Manitowoc County County Council . A year later, in 1860, he was a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly . During the Civil War he was a captain in a Wisconsin infantry regiment that fought on the Union side.

After the war, Rankin settled in Manitowoc . From 1866 to 1871 he was City Clerk in his new hometown. From 1871 to 1874 he sat again as a member of the state parliament. He then belonged to the Wisconsin Senate between 1877 and 1882 . In the congressional elections of 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fifth constituency of Wisconsin, where he succeeded Edward S. Bragg on March 4, 1883 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 24, 1886 . He was buried in Manitowoc.
