The county is located in eastern Wisconsin and borders Lake Michigan . It has an area of 3869 square kilometers, of which 2338 square kilometers are water.

history
Manitowoc County was formed in 1836 as the original county from parts of the Wisconsin Territory. It was named, like the district capital, after an Indian expression, which loosely translated means something like mysterious land .
