geography
The county is located in northwest Wisconsin and is about 45 km to the west from the Mississippi , which forms the border with Minnesota . It has an area of 2305 square kilometers, of which 70 square kilometers are water.
The county is traversed from north to south by the Red Cedar River , a tributary of the Chippewa River that flows into the Mississippi .

history
Barron County was formed in 1859 from parts of Polk County and the defunct Dallas County. It was named, like the district capital, after Henry D. Barron , a US judge and politician.
