The county is located in the far northwest of Wisconsin, bordered to the north by Lake Superior , one of the 5 Great Lakes . The northernmost point of Wisconsin is located on the offshore Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. The county has an area of 5941 square kilometers, of which 3237 square kilometers are water. The lowest point is 220 m (Ashland) and the highest is 614 m ( Mt. Whittlesey ). history
Ashland County was formed on March 27, 1860 from parts of the defunct La Pointe County. It was named, like the district capital, after the residence of Henry Clay , a US politician (member of the House of Representatives , the US Senate , Secretary of State ) and opponent of slavery .
