The county is located in northwest Wisconsin and borders Minnesota to the west , separated by the St. Croix River , which forms the natural boundary. It has an area of 1906 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. The following neighboring counties border St. Croix County:

history

St. Croix County was formed in 1840 as the original county from parts of the Wisconsin Territory . It was named after the St. Croix River on the county's western border. The origin of the name is controversial. One theory is based on the name of a French explorer named St. Croix , another says that the Belgian Franciscan Father Louis Hennepin named the river after the Holy Cross (French: St. Croix ).
