The county is located in southwest Wisconsin, on the north bank of the Wisconsin River , a left tributary of the Mississippi . It is about 50 km from Iowa to the west and about 50 miles from Illinois to the south. It has an area of 1526 square kilometers of which 8 square kilometers are water. Richland County was formed in 1842 from parts of Iowa County. It was named after the (rich) good farmland.
