The Sawyer County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , the county had 16,557 residents and a population density of 5.1 people per square kilometer. By 2013, the population decreased slightly to 16,513. The county seat is Hayward , named after Anthony Judson Hayward , who owned the only sawmill in the area.

The county is located in northwestern Wisconsin and has an area of 3,497 square kilometers, of which 243 square kilometers are water.
The Namekagon River flows through the northwest of the county and forms part of the Mississippi River basin over the Saint Croix River . The southeast of Sawyer County is traversed by the Flambeau River , which is also drained by the Mississippi via the Chippewa River .

Sawyer County was formed in 1883 from parts of Ashland County and Chippewa County. It was named after Philetus Sawyer (1816-1900), a member of the US House of Representatives and US Senator .
