The Iron County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , the county had 5,916 people and a population density of 3 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hurley , named after M. A. Hurley , a local judge and owner of an iron ore mine.
geography
The county is located in northern Wisconsin and is bordered to the north by Michigan and Lake Superior , the largest of the five Great Lakes .
Iron County covers an area of 2381 square kilometers, of which 420 square kilometers are water.
In the south of the county is the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage , a reservoir of the Flambeau River, which belongs to the Mississippi basin over the Chippewa River .

history
Iron County was formed on March 1, 1893 from parts of Ashland County and Oneida County. It was named after the iron ore deposits and mines that existed here.
