history

The town was named after MA Hurley , a lawyer from Wausau who won a lawsuit for the Northern Chief Iron Company in 1884. In return, he did not ask for payment, but asked that the place that was involved in this lawsuit be named after his name. This request was granted and the place was initially called Glen Hurley , but in 1885 then Hurley . The main industries of the city were in particular the timber industry and the iron ore industry. Two huge fires in 1888 destroyed most of the wooden houses. The city was then rebuilt with houses made of stone. Silver Street still bears witness to the reconstruction with its ancient buildings.

The historic Old Iron County Courthouse (now The Iron County Historical Museum ) has been added to the National Register of Historic Places .
