The county is located in southwest Wisconsin, on the south bank of the Wisconsin River , a left tributary of the Mississippi . It is about 50 km to the south from Illinois , about 70 km to the west from Iowa , and has an area of ​​1989 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water.
