The Washburn County is a county in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 , the county had 15,911 residents and a population density of 7.6 people per square kilometer. By 2013 the population had decreased to 15,686. The county seat is Shell Lake .
geography
The county is located in northwest Wisconsin and about 25 miles west of Minnesota . It has an area of 2209 square kilometers, of which 112 square kilometers are water.
In the center, the county is traversed from east to west by the Namekagon River , which belongs to the Mississippi basin over the Saint Croix River . The Yellow River flows further south, and further west also flows into the St. Croix River.

history
Washburn County was formed in 1883 from parts of Burnett County. It was named after Cadwallader C. Washburn (1818-1882), a politician and governor of Wisconsin (1872-1874).
