geography
The county is located in southeast Wisconsin and is about 30 km to the east from Lake Michigan . It has an area of 1129 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water.
The northeast of the county is traversed by the Milwaukee River, which flows into Lake Michigan further south in the city of Milwaukee .

history
Washington County was formed from parts of the Wisconsin Territory in 1836 . It was named after George Washington , the first President of the United States.
Holy Hill has been a major Catholic pilgrimage site since the 1860s .
