The county is located just south of the geographic center of Wisconsin and has an area of 1783 square kilometers, of which 106 square kilometers are water. The lowest point is 310 m and the highest is 415 m. The Wisconsin Rivers and Lemonweir Rivers flow through the county . Adams County is bordered by the following neighboring counties:

Adams County was formed on March 11, 1848 from parts of Portage County. It was named after John Quincy Adams , the sixth President of the USA.
