The county is located in northern Wisconsin in a forest and lake-rich landscape on the Michigan border . It has an area of 2636 square kilometers, of which 373 square kilometers are water.
In Vilas County, the origin of the is Mississippi opens Wisconsin River , the over the Chippewa River also draining into the Mississippi Flambeau River and the Lake Superior opens in Michigan Presque Isle River .
The Eagle River , which also belongs to the Mississippi River basin via the Wisconsin River, flows through the southeast of the county .

Vilas County was formed in 1893 from parts of Oneida County. It was named after William Vilas (1840-1908), a former senator , post office secretary and interior secretary of the USA.

As of the 2010 census , Vilas County had 21,430 people in 10,668 households. The population density was 9.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 1.99 people lived in each of the 10,668 households.
