The county is located in northeast Wisconsin and borders Green Bay on Lake Michigan to the east . It has an area of 2976 square kilometers, of which 391 square kilometers are water surface. Large parts of the county are covered with deciduous forests. The predominant tree species is the maple . The county is traversed by the eponymous Oconto River .
