Oconto is a city and the administrative seat of Oconto County in the northeast of the US state Wisconsin . With 4,513 inhabitants ( as of 2010 ), Oconto is the county's largest city.

Oconto lies at 44 ° 53 'north latitude and 87 ° 52' west longitude, extends over 19.1 km² (17.8 km² of which is land area) at an altitude of 179 meters above sea level. The city is located at the confluence of the Oconto River with the Bay of Green Bay in Lake Michigan .

In the city center, Wisconsin Highway 22 , which comes into the city from the west, joins US Highway 41, which runs through the city in a north-south direction . The city's bypass is also part of US Highway 41.

The city is connected to the Canadian National route network.

The Austin Straubel International Airport is 50 kilometers west of the city.

The nearest larger cities are Marinette (approx. 35 km northeast), Sturgeon Bay (approx. 50 km east on the opposite bank of Green Bay) and Green Bay (approx. 50 km south). Madison , the capital of the state is approx. 260 km southwest and Chicago , the next megacity , approx. 360 km south.

Demographic data

In the 2000 census, the population was 4,708. These were distributed over 1870 households in 1221 families. The population density was 263.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. There were 2040 residential buildings, which corresponded to a building density of 114.3 buildings per square kilometer.

The population in 2000 was 97.8 percent white , 0.8 percent Native American , 0.2 percent Asian and 0.3 percent other. 0.9 percent said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.8 percent of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

25.8 percent were under 18 years of age, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 20.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.7 percent 65 and older. The mean age was 37 years. For every 100 women there were statistically 92.2 men, 89.0 among the over 18 year olds.

The median income per household was 34,589  US dollars  (USD), the median family income 43676 USD. The median income for males was $ 27,455 and females was $ 22,083. The per capita income was $ 20,717. Around 5.2 percent of families and 8.8 percent of the total population had their income below the poverty line .
