Sturgeon Bay is a small town (with the status " City ") in Door County in the US -amerikanischen State Wisconsin . In 2010 Sturgeon Bay had 9144 residents, making it the county's largest city.

geography

Sturgeon Bay is 44 ° 49 ′ north latitude and 87 ° 22 ′ west longitude, extends over 29.3 km 2 (24.9 km 2 of which on land) at an altitude of 178 meters above sea level on the Door Peninsula , which separates Green Bay and Lake Michigan . With the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal within the city, the northern part of the peninsula became a de facto island.

The nearest larger cities are Green Bay (approx. 65 km southwest), Appleton (approx. 110 km southwest) and Sheboygan (approx. 130 km south). Madison , the capital of the state, is approx. 280 km southwest and Chicago , the next megacity , approx. 350 km south.

Sturgeon Bay Bridge

Wisconsin Highways 42 and 57 run through town . The highways run in the city on the same route and lead over the Sturgeon Bay Bridge , a bascule bridge over Sturgeon Bay, in a north-easterly direction out of Sturgeon Bay.

The city was connected to the route network of the Ahnapee and Western Railway . The route has been closed and is used as the Ahnapee State Trail .

The nearest airport is Austin Straubel International Airport , 80 kilometers southwest of the city.

history

The first settler in what is now the city was Increase Claflin, who built a house on Sturgeon Bay in 1835. In the period from 1872 to 1881 the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal was built, which facilitated shipping between Green Bay and the greater Chicago area.
