Life

He attended school in his hometown of Leeuwarden, one of his classmates was Suffridus Petrus (1527–1597). He then went to Utrecht, where he studied with Macropedius . In addition to his legal studies, he devoted himself, contrary to his father's wishes, to philology, from 1548 in Leuven , one year later in Bourges, France . After a stay in Italy he became a council member in Mechelen in 1560 . A few years later he became the envoy of Margaret of Parma to Frederick II in Denmark . In 1569 he became council president in Utrecht , "more to prevent bad things at the time of the uprising than from internal inclination."

Rataller made a name for himself primarily as a translator of Greek works which he translated into Latin ( Hesiod , Sophocles , Euripides, etc.).
