Halde in the sculpture park

The Zollverein Sculpture Park is a sculpture park with works by the German sculptor Ulrich Rückriem in the Stoppenberg district of Essen .

The sculpture park was built in 1991 on the occasion of the next year's documenta IX in the area of the Zeche Zollverein , on the mining dump between Shaft XII and the coking plant, which has been closed since 1986 and is only a few meters high . The artist Ulrich Rückriem created a total of six works from 24 individual stone blocks. With the sculpture park, part of the documenta was outsourced for the first time. Rückriem later rented the nearby hall of the central workshop at Zollverein as a studio for five years.

The sculpture Castell , made up of man-high granite blocks weighing tons, lies on a central open space , whose meditative, quiet, self-contained space can be entered through narrow aisles on the sides. In the birch and robinia forest there are other granite sculptures, some of which are hidden in the thicket. The edge of the heap is also marked with granite blocks.

The Kohlenbergbau- and industrial complex Zollverein coal mine is an industrial monument in Essen and since 2001 a part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO . In 2010 the Zeche Zollverein was the cultural center of the event RUHR.2010 - European Capital of Culture . The dump with the sculpture park belongs to the Zollverein Foundation , which takes care of its operation and maintenance.
