The Kunsthaus Essen in the Essen district of Rellinghausen is an exhibition and event center for artists in Essen.

Art house

The Kunsthaus was founded in 1977:

The founding members are shown on the poster.

  • top row: Lisa Klahold, Albrecht Nolte, Rolf-Maria Rexhausen, Tom Forger, Günter Sponheuer
  • bottom row: Jürgen Fraczewski, Bärbel Forger, Walter Nagat, Waltraud Steuer, Jo Schäfer

The first joint exhibition of these founding members took place in November 1977 in the Bizard Gallery in Bochum. The first joint work was a poster for the Bochum exhibition based on an idea by Walter Nagat. The aim of the artists was to rent an empty house, speculating on an old school building, in which, in addition to living studios for the members, various workshops for working with wood and metal, a pottery and a photo laboratory should be located. The group wanted to gain more creativity for their own work by dealing with the work of the other artists.

At the same time, a communication center with all kinds of artistic representation should be made available to the public. In 1978 suitable premises were rented in the former "Adler" laundry in the backyard of Eduard-Lucasstrasse. 26a in Essen. In the same year the expansion of a wood workshop, a painting studio and a photo laboratory began. The renovation work increased the feeling of togetherness, but at the same time the artistic content was neglected. Some members withdrew, others joined them. There was cooperation with the cultural office of the city of Essen and the AWO (Arbeiterwohlfahrt). A course program was developed.

There were performances by Pigeon Drop, who had signed Rolf Maria Rexhausen and Dana Savic directly from the Festival of Fools in Amsterdam, as well as concerts by Helge Schneider , who was often ready to perform when there were financial difficulties, and Stefan Stoppok with the Stender band .

Harald Schmidt , who had just been brought to the Düsseldorfer Kommödchen by Kay Lorentz , performed his first solo program. These highlights were due, among other things, to the good contacts made by the Kunsthaus managing director Andreas Kunze , who died in 2010. Other important people were as managing directors: Günter Sponheuer, Folkwang performance award winner for painting in 1967 and as board member: Waltraut Steuer.

In the mid- 1980s , the Kunsthaus moved to a former school in the Rellinghausen district of Essen, where it developed into a regionally and internationally important exhibition and production location for contemporary art . The conception of the exhibitions, publications and events are developed and carried out by the artists and members represented in the house. There are 16 permanent studios , a sound studio, a modern dance hall and a studio with living space for the artist in residence program of the house.

Monday, Monday

The concert series Monday-Monday has been running in the café of the Kunsthaus since 2010, the year of the Ruhr Area's Capital of Culture. Since every Monday musicians, bands and performers have been playing a one-hour concert with free admission.

building

The school building was built by Oskar Schwer , the architect responsible for the entire Gottfried Wilhelm colony in Essen-Rellinghausen. The "Städtische Knabenmittelschule Essen-Süd" was inaugurated in today's Kunsthaus in 1925, the predecessor of today's Albert Einstein Realschule . The school itself has the first documents for 1934; documents may have been destroyed during the Second World War. After the resumption of classes in 1945, the students had to endure long shifts with morning and afternoon classes. In 1953 the groundbreaking ceremony for a new school building on Ardeyplatz took place - the first ever new school building in the city of Essen after the Second World War. In the following year, classes began in the new classrooms.
