Johannes Dieter Gramm (* 1964 in Essen ) is a German photo artist , painter , set designer and video artist .

Life

Gramm was born in 1964 as the second child of Mechthild and the chemistry didactic Altfrid Gramm in Essen. After school and community service, he studied philosophy, German and mathematics at the University of Essen from 1987 to 1997. In Faculty 4 - from which the current Faculty of Design at the Folkwang University of the Arts emerged - he completed his art studies in László Lakner's class in 1997 in the subjects of painting, graphics and photography. Since then he has been working as a freelance visual artist in Berlin, Essen and the neighboring Netherlands.

job

In addition to exhibitions of his pictures and installations, Gramms work also includes stage sets for various houses and productions across Europe, exhibition architecture as well as performative events and illustrations. From 2004 to 2009 Gramm worked as a lecturer for drawing at the University of Duisburg-Essen , from 2005 to 2007 as a lecturer for stage design at the FH Dortmund and since 2016 for portrait photography at the TU Dortmund . Thematically, his work is not limited to one genre. Gramm combines a wide variety of techniques and areas in order to process and present the topics relevant to him, comparable to a musical remix. Due to his experience in theater and ballet , he often resorts to different techniques and genres or the collaboration of other artists.

The pictorial spectrum ranges from classic portraits or photographic self-portraits, e.g. B. with references to gender issues , topics in connection with cultural appropriation to dealing with the works of other artists. Mention is here z. B. his book "No", published together with Laas Abendroth, with the answers to the questions of Peter Fischli and David Weiss, as well as a series directly related to Bas Jan Ader's work "Broken fall (Geometric)" from 1971, the gram varies 35 times falling in front of the Westkapelle lighthouse, which is also visible in the background of Ader .

In 2013 he is also running an artistic campaign as a non-party direct candidate in the Essen III constituency for the 18th German Bundestag . The constituency was won by the candidate of the CDU by only 3 votes . Furthermore, one of the polling stations in the constituency opened half an hour late, so that citizens could not vote. With his artistic poster campaign - various motifs from a self-portrait series - Gramm sparked discussions as to whether the votes cast for him were the decisive factor.
