Life

Christiane Kuhlmann was born in Essen in 1967. After graduating from high school in 1987, she enrolled at the University of Mainz in the subjects of art history, ancient and modern history. She continued her studies in art history at the University of Bochum - among others with Max Imdahl , history and romance studies, and received her master's degree there in 1997 on "Dance photography as a mirror of the avant-garde". In 2001 she received her doctorate under Katharina Sykora in the subject of art history as a scholarship holder of the Cusanuswerk on "Medial entanglement of photography and dance in the 1920s".
Since then she has worked as a journalist for Westdeutscher Rundfunk and as a freelance curator for photography and contemporary art in museums and exhibition halls in Europe. In addition, Kuhlmann is the author of publications and lectures on the theory and history of photography. After a teaching position in the history of photography at the University of Bochum, she was appointed in 2011 as a member of the team of experts to set up the "Camera Arts" course at the University of Design and Art in Lucerne.
In addition to the presentation of the photography course of the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academy 2009 at the Venice Biennale, the exhibition “A Star Is Born” was one of her great successes as a curator. Developed in collaboration with Ute Eskildsen, this was the most successful photo exhibition to date in the Folkwang Museum . The catalog published in connection with this was recognized as the best "music book" of the year by The Guardian magazine in the USA . In 2013, Kuhlmann curated the Hannes Schmid exhibition "Real Stories" at the Kunstmuseum Bern . 2009-2015 Kuhlmann chairman and curator of the Kunsthaus Essen and taught at this time as a lecturer Theory and History of Photography at the Department of Design at the Fachhochschule Dortmund . Since 2014 she has also worked for Roland Angst's gallery Only Photography in Berlin. In 2015 she worked in the Berlinische Galerie as part of the Thomas Friedrich grant for photography research for the photographer Erich Salomon . Christiane Kuhlmann has been curator for photography and media art at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg since 2016 .
