The Museo Picasso in Málaga ( Andalusia , Spain ) presented in the premises of the Palacio de Buenavista at Calle San Augustin, near the birthplace of Pablo Picasso , with more than 200 of his works, both paintings and sculptures and ceramics, an overview of all periods of the Artist.

History of the Palacio de Buenavista

The building in its current form dates from the 16th century and is an example of the mixture of, in this case Italian, Renaissance and Mudejar architecture that was widespread in southern Spain during this period . It was built between 1530 and 1540 for Diego de Cazalla, paymaster of the royal army and navy. In 1487, during the Reconquista, Cazalla was involved in the conquest of the city, which was then part of the Nasrid emirate (cf. al-Andalus ). Parts of the building, such as the eastern tower and the main courtyard, indicate that it was built on the site of a Nasrid palace. It served as a family residence until the 19th century.

In 1939 it was declared a Monumento nacional ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) and leased by the state in 1946. In 1961 the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes (Provincial Museum of Fine Arts) was opened there.

Picasso Collection

In 1997, the Andalusian government acquired the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista in order to set up the first museum entirely dedicated to the works of Picasso in his native city. This building was chosen because Christine Ruiz-Picasso, who provided the majority of the exhibits, preferred a typically Andalusian building for the presentation of the collection. In October 1997 a foundation was established to which Picasso's heirs left works by the artist for exhibition for 50 years. To accommodate the collection, the library, the documentation center, a training center and an auditorium, some adjacent buildings were also adapted or newly constructed. Richard Gluckman, Isabel Cámara and Rafael Martín Delgado were responsible for the architectural management of the renovation work. In January 2006, the American Institute of Architects awarded the Museo Picasso an honorary prize, honoring the successful adaptation of the almost 500-year-old building and the harmonious integration of the new parts of the building into the surrounding old town.

The opening took place on October 27, 2003. The first director was Carmen Giménez, who had previously initiated two exhibitions on Picasso in Málaga and had played a key role in promoting the idea of a new Picasso museum.
