Jan Nijboer

Jan Nijboer (* 1959 ) is a Dutch author, dog education advisor and dog trainer .

Nijboer originally worked in the social-educational field dealing with people who were difficult to educate. Through his dog breeding and his work in the Dutch cynological association Raad van Beheer , he came to be involved in the training of service dogs . Jan Nijboer has been working full-time with dog training since 1984 . For the Soho (social honors) and SAM (Servicehonden voor Auditiv en / of motor handicapped) foundations, he trained service dogs and was a trainer for dog education advisors and service dog trainers.

From 1992 to 1996 Nijboer was a visiting lecturer at the University of Groningen (Netherlands) for the animal management department.

Jan Nijboer has lived in Germany since 1996 and currently runs a dog center in Niederwambach. In addition to seminars in which he communicates his educational philosophy of Natural Dogmanship , he also organizes seminars on communication and the appropriate employment of dogs. He also offers general specialist training to become a dog training consultant in Germany and Switzerland. Further training courses for natural dogmanship instructors are also offered there.

The educational philosophy he developed is based on educational and developmental principles. In addition, ethology , neurobiology , environmental and behavioral enrichment , sociology (the role of the dog in our society compared to other cultures) and communication form the basis of his dog training . The aim is not to adapt the dog to humans, but to teach humans how to meet the dog's species-specific needs. The dog's instinctive behavior is discussed. An attempt is made to steer behavior into socially acceptable forms.

The core element is that the caregiver, as the person in charge, should assume the parenting role of the protege dog. Nijboer wants to achieve this on the one hand by humans guaranteeing the safety of the dog and on the other hand by teaching his dog (from a dog's point of view) practical life skills and thus becoming a role model for the dog. Nijboer rejects Starkzwang. Social learning, learning by example and guidance based on constructivism are central to his philosophy. He relies on the dog's intrinsic motivation . Nijboer does not believe in extrinsic motivation , as is common in many training methods.
