Bildgehege is the name of the artist duo Miriam Giessler (born October 7, 1960 in Essen ) and Hubert Sandmann (born January 27, 1960 in Gelsenkirchen- Buer). Since 1997 they have been realizing installations together - very often art in public spaces . But both of them also work alone, they live and work in Essen-Kettwig today .

life and work

Miriam Giessler studied communication design with Rolf Lieberknecht at the GHS Essen from 1988 to 1993 and graduated with a diploma. She has been a freelance artist since 1993, and has also been working with Hubert Sandmann since 1997.

Hubert Sandmann studied from 1981 to 1988 Architecture at the GHS Essen at Eckhard Gerber and at the Dusseldorf Art Academy in Laurids Ortner . After completing his studies, he initially worked as an architect before moving to Günther Domenig's chair at the Graz University of Technology in 1993 . From 1995 he took on the teaching position for the basics of design, and from 1997 the teaching position for architecture and film. The artistic interest that ultimately transcended the boundaries of architecture manifested itself through participation in the international summer academies for fine arts in Salzburg (1990, 1995) and Hamburg (1991, 2001). Sandmann dealt with painting, video, sculpture and web design.

Bildhege deals with the small and large perceptions in public space . Through the use of a wide variety of means and media, the view is sharpened also for the inconspicuous, apparently little important. In doing so, poetic moments are created in places where they are not expected. One example is the "viaduct" made of raw boards on a tumbledown traffic island in Essen. Here the game with the architectural form is already broken by the choice of material. At the same time, the choice of location is a counterpoint to the topos of the viaduct or the bridge, but at the same time it is also logical. With other works such as "Capsule", however, Bildgehege also takes up contemporary issues with artistic means.

Memorial to the witch burnings

In October 2014, Bildgehege won an art competition in Bamberg for a memorial to the burning of witches . The jury selected the "Brandmal" design from Bildgehege from around one hundred and eighty applications from all over Europe. The memorial was built in 2015 behind Geyerswörth Castle .

"The design provides for a light sculpture to be erected close to the ground on the area designated for the memorial behind Geyerswörth Castle. A rectangular plate made of Cor-Ten steel will be installed over the historical pavement orange-colored acrylic glass panes. Light shines both through the glass and onto the surface. The work of art is intended to represent the "abstract image of a branding or branding iron on the skin of the city", explains Miriam Giessler: "The work allows for a lot of associations, concerning the suffering of the so-called witches tortured to death in the past. It also represents a warning against the trivialization of certain attitudes that promote exclusion and xenophobia. ""
