Sven Drühl

Sven Drühl (* 1968 in Nassau (Lahn) ) is a contemporary German artist and art scholar .

life and work

From 1991 to 1996 he studied art and mathematics at the University of Essen . Since 1997 he has been teaching and giving guest lectures at universities in Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Dresden and Leipzig. For the spring of 2011 he took over a visiting professorship at the Chinese-German Art Academy in Hangzhou (a joint project of the Berlin University of the Arts and the China Academy of Art Hangzhou).

In 2002 he had his first solo exhibition in a museum in Leverkusen. Since then, solo and group exhibitions have followed in the USA, Great Britain, France, Spain, Norway, China, Korea and Switzerland.

As an art historian, he received his doctorate in 2005 on the subject of "The unifomed artist" at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt and since 2000 he has published 12 volumes of the journal Kunstforum International as guest editor on topics as diverse as real time, violence, idyll, sport, Transgenic Art, the Magical and New Abstraction. Most recently, together with Christoph Tannert, he published the two-volume artist compedium "Berlin.Status", in which more than 100 national and international artists from the years 1973–1984 living in Berlin are presented.

Drühl works in the field of conceptual painting , remixing and transforming paintings from art history and contemporary art. The works are in the tradition of serial art and appropriation art . As an extension of the concept, large-format diptychs and triptychs as well as neon light works are created.

Sven Drühl is a member of the German Association of Artists . He lives in Berlin.
