history

The Ratingen Museum was founded in 1926 as a local museum . Was housed the first small collection in the so-called community center , the medieval core, 1751 renewed City Hall building in the market square. In 1977 the museum moved to its current location, initially limited to the historical rooms on Lintorfer Straße. The small town house from the mid-19th century and an adjoining office building served as improvised exhibition space. In 1978 an extension was built on Grabenstrasse. The striking architecture of the new city museum with exposed walls, concrete ceilings and exposed ventilation pipes corresponded to the taste of the time that the Center Pompidou , which had just opened in Paris , was celebrating. In 1990 the museum was expanded to include additional exhibition space, so that today it presents its collections and temporary exhibitions on an area of around 1,600 m 2 .

In 2012, the Ratingen Museum was renovated from January to September. In addition to a new fire and burglar alarm system , a flexible rail system for lighting was installed, which reacts to the different requirements of the internal structure of exhibitions.

Art collection

Modern art from the post-war period after the Second World War in Germany to the present day forms the focus of the collection of paintings , drawings and graphics . Particular attention is paid to the work of the informal painter Peter Brüning from Ratingen . Sculptures are particularly illuminated in the project "Kunstweg" in relation to the surrounding landscape . The museum also houses the legacies of the sculptors Maria Fuss and Doris Rücker. The extensive porcelain collection of Johann Peter Melchior , a porcelain modeler of the late 18th century, ultimately forges a close connection between art and handicrafts .
