Peter Brüning

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Brüning (born November 21, 1929 in Düsseldorf , † December 25, 1970 in Ratingen ) was an internationally recognized German painter and sculptor of the modern age . His works from the 1950s can be assigned to the Informel .

Life

Supported by his parents, Peter Brüning began to work artistically as a teenager. In 1950 he began studying with Willi Baumeister at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart . He counted Willi Baumeister and Fernand Léger among his artistic models and dealt with Expressionism and Cubism in his early work before he found his own style. Drawings determined his early artistic work.

In 1951 he traveled to Paris for the first time with the Baumeister class. From 1952 to 1954, Brüning was a UNESCO scholarship holder in Soisy-sur-Seine , 30 km southwest of Paris, in France . During this time he traveled all over France and Spain, in particular he looked around in nearby Paris .

Since 1953 he was a member of the " Niederrhein artist group ", renamed " Gruppe 53 " in 1955 , together with Gerhard Hoehme , Herbert Kaufmann , Albert Fürst , Fritz Bierhoff and Rolf Sackenheim . Further members since 1955 were Karl Fred Dahmen , Winfred Gaul , Horst Egon Kalinowski , Konrad Klapheck , Heinz Mack , Otto Piene , Friederich Werthmann and Gerhard Wind . Italian, but above all French artists took part in the group's exhibitions alongside Bernard Schultze and Emil Schumacher as guests.

Peter Brüning became one of the most important representatives of German Informel in the 1950s and 1960s. He had been friends with the French art critic Pierre Restany since 1954 . His house on an idyllic lake in Ratingen, on the border with Düsseldorf, became a meeting point and contact point for many artists, collectors and other protagonists involved in the »art business«. In 1955 he was awarded the Cornelius Prize of the City of Düsseldorf.

In 1964, Brüning invented a new type of landscape painting , “legends” and “traffic landscapes ”. He began to paint with schematic symbols and pictograms , which he took from the symbolic language of cartography, later from traffic signs ("diversion signs"). This new visual language is also called: "Semantic Art".

The Autobahn memorial

From 1966 on, Peter Brüning discovered sculpture for himself and began to design sculptural objects. Spatial arrangements, such as the motorway memorial created in 1968 in the Ehrenberg car park (between the Wuppertal- Süd and Wuppertal-East motorway junctions ), are also part of his repertoire .

Brüning is one of the best-known and most successful artists in Germany with numerous exhibitions and awards at home and abroad. For example, he participated in documenta II, III and 4 from 1959 to 1968 in Kassel , and in 1961 he received the Villa Romana Prize.

In 1969 Brüning was appointed professor for free painting at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf . He died on December 25, 1970 at the age of 41 in Ratingen.
