Market and showman museum

The market and showman museum in Essen's west quarter uses selected exhibits to show the history of showmanship since the end of the 18th century.

Emergence

Today's museum emerged from the passion for collecting of the Hanover-born showman Erich Knocke (1927–2011). The collected exhibits were located on Berliner Platz in a hall near the Essen wholesale market until 1996 . The city of Essen, which has been closely associated with the Market and Showman Museum for years, made a factory hall near the main train station available free of charge after the wholesale market was demolished . Here visitors can now see the development of the fairground trade, but also the fun at fairs, with restored originals.

There are only group tours.

Exhibits

The museum shows countless market and fairground figures made of wood, porcelain, pewter, sheet metal and silver. It presents games, puzzles, wall plates and tapestries with motifs relating to markets , funfairs and circuses . Personal documents and photographs of showman families missing any more than objects for pre- and early history of photography, which works closely with carnival and fun fair was connected. One finds z. B. carousels and carousel animals , morality boards and traveling cinema equipment. There are also market carts and fairground caravans, a scissors grinder and, last but not least, a unique collection of musical instruments from the fair: barrel organ , back pianos , harmonies , orchestras and barrel organs .

These exhibits also have great historical value. They often date from the last decades of the 19th and first half of the 20th century; some pieces were made in the 18th century.
