The west quarter of the city of Essen , which borders the city center in the west , together with the south quarter , the north quarter , the east quarter , the south- east quarter and the city center form the city center .

character

Part of the west quarter from the east: in front on the left the former entrance to the Krupp cast steel factory with the Colosseum Theater on the left , behind it the Krupp headquarters , in front of the old works railway bridge from 1872 and next to it the former pressing and hammer plant east (today Ikea), behind it on the right Krupp administration building,
ThyssenKrupp headquarters on the right behind the employment agency

The west quarter has only a few residential developments and consists mainly of industrial areas that formerly belonged to the Krupp cast steel factory , on which businesses and retailers are now based, as well as parks.

Since the main part of the armaments industry was located here, most of the cast steel factory buildings on the site were destroyed by the Allies during World War II or dismantled for reparation purposes. The few remaining buildings include the former bullet turning shop, the 8th mechanical workshop, today the Colosseum Theater , the former pressing and hammer mill East and part of the former Krupp headquarters .

The areas that were largely unused for decades are now an important development area in the city. The Berthold-Beitz-Boulevard , which was completed in 2011 in the Westviertel, will open up new areas. In 2010, the ThyssenKrupp group relocated its headquarters from Düsseldorf to Essen to the ThyssenKrupp headquarters , which thus forms the core of the Krupp belt . The Real hypermarket located on the western edge of the district moved into the Kronenberg-Center shopping center , which opened on October 24, 2013 mainly on the site of the former Kronenberg workers' colony , east of today's Haedenkampstraße, to accommodate new retail and new residential developments north of Altendorfer Straße To make room. The foundation stone for the Kronenberg Center was laid on May 24, 2012, followed by the topping-out ceremony on April 11, 2013. On a total area of around 63,000 square meters, 25,000 square meters of retail space for a garden center, a real market and 23 other shops have been created.

The 13 hectare site of the former Essen Nord freight depot , between the University of Duisburg-Essen and Berliner Platz, was converted between 2011 and 2016 into the university district of Grüne Mitte Essen , a residential and work area with a park. The 560 meter long park between Segerothstrasse and Rheinischer Platz was officially opened on July 2, 2010. Condominiums and rental apartments as well as smaller office buildings have been built since mid-2011. An important task of the quarter is to create a connection between the city center and the north quarter, as this area was problematic for decades in terms of urban history. Before the war, the railway embankment separated the working-class Segeroth district from downtown Essen, which increased the social tensions between "long-established" Essenes and "newcomers" (many of them at Krupp). The Segeroth was then destroyed in the war and not rebuilt, the area was used with improvised and "wild" development. From 1972, after the wild development had been cleared, the comprehensive university in Essen was built here . The former freight yard and the former wholesale market area remained idle for a long time and thus formed a spatial separation between today's northern district and the city center. The closing event of the Essen Love Parade took place on the fallow site in 2007 . At the western end of the university district, the foundation stone was laid on July 4, 2016 for the Funke Mediengruppe media house , which cost around 80 million euros and went into operation in January 2019 .

Today the Westviertel also includes a Cinemaxx cinema, the Magna Tower (formerly Iduna high-rise), the Essen Federal Employment Agency , the Essen tax office, a municipal vocational college and large-scale retail.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the Essen city center

Blazon : "In blue an oblique left golden (yellow) sword, accompanied above and below by three golden (yellow) balls."

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts. They have meanwhile been well received by the Essen population. The sword as an attribute of the city patrons Cosmas and Damian makes the reference to the Essen city coat of arms. The golden balls symbolize the six districts city center , north quarter , east quarter , southeast quarter , south quarter and west quarter.
