Former pressing and hammer plant east

The pressing and hammer plant east was part of the Krupp cast steel factory . Since 1992 the redesigned, listed factory hall in the west quarter of the city of Essen has been used as a parking garage for a furniture store.

history

The factory building of the former press and hammer mill was built between 1915 and 1917. Together with the 8th mechanical workshop opposite , today's Colosseum Theater, and the works railway bridge in front of it from 1872, it formed a representative main entrance area from the old town of Essen to the so-called Kruppstadt. The sophisticated design stood out from the other factory buildings.

In contrast to the cast steel factory, which was otherwise badly hit in the Second World War , which at that time mainly produced armaments, the ensemble of buildings in these two workshops was retained. This also includes the brick factory building of the former floor turning shop, west of the 8th mechanical workshop. This brick building from 1873 is the only remaining building of the former cast steel factory, which already existed during Alfred Krupp's lifetime . Today it is the seat of the Center for Turkish Studies.

The world's largest forging press was put into operation in the press and hammer mill in 1929. With its 15,000 tons of pressing force, it enabled the forging of high-pressure vessels from ingots weighing up to 300 tons. This steam hydraulic press was dismantled after the war and taken to what was then Yugoslavia , but not rebuilt.

After the workshop was listed on September 13, 1990, it was converted into a parking garage. The characteristic brick facade including steel construction was retained. This car park has been used by the adjacent Swedish furniture store since 1992.
