Crucible cast memorial on the grounds of the ThyssenKrupp headquarters

The crucible cast monument is located in the Krupp belt on Altendorfer Strasse in the Westviertel district of Essen and is reminiscent of the crucible steel production in the former Krupp cast steel factory .

history

The memorial consists of a semicircular wall made of red sandstone, on the inside of which cast plates show the work steps in the production of Krupp crucible steel, from making the casting molds to cleaning the finished casting. Thus, a steel memorial was erected for steel production , which is 22 meters long and weighs around nine tons in the form of a semi-arch.

It was designed in 1935 by the Berlin sculptor Artur Hoffmann on behalf of Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach and his wife Bertha Krupp before the Second World War . But due to a shortage of materials and other adversities, it could only be carried out after the war and installed in 1952. Since then, it has been reminiscent of the Krupp production facility, which, as part of the cast steel factory, was only about a hundred meters away. Gustav Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach did not live to see the completion of the monument, as he had died in 1950.

The company's founder, Friedrich Krupp , was able to manufacture the crucible steel, which was then high-quality, as early as 1823, even if the results remained unclear and important metallurgical relationships could not yet be explained.

The crucible cast memorial has been entered in the monuments list of the city of Essen since 1990.
