Beneficiary House

The beneficiary houses are part of the only partially preserved Altenhof settlement in the Rüttenscheid district of Essen . In the settlement built in 1901 by Friedrich Alfred Krupp , the beneficiary houses housed small dormitories for his former workers who lived in single rooms and were cared for together.

history

Between 1897 and 1910 important buildings were built for the Kaiserin- Auguste-Viktoria -holungshaus for convalescent former workers. This former Kaiserin-Auguste-Viktoria-Erholungshaus would be called a health clinic today. The so-called Witwenhof around a former rectangular green area belonged to these buildings. Part of this widow's yard were five beneficiary houses, which were built between 1900 and 1901 as two-story half-timbered houses by the manager of the Krupp construction office, Robert Schmohl . Long-time former Krupp workers could get board and lodging here as widows or widowers. These houses formed the northern edge of the Altenhof settlement.

In the houses at house numbers 54 and 58, the widows had single rooms and a small kitchen, in which they could prepare their own meals. The other two houses at numbers 56 and 60 each offered single rooms for twelve widowers around a common hallway. Six widowers shared a bathroom and toilet on each floor. They received their three daily meals from the kitchen of the Kaiserin-Auguste-Viktoria-Erholungshaus for a fee.

The granite monument with a bronze relief by Friedrich Alfred Krupp once stood in the middle of the Altenhof settlement. It was created by the sculptor Otto Lang and is now northeast of the beneficiary houses.

State today

In Wittekindstrasse, next to the former Catholic church, today the chapel of the Alfried Krupp Hospital , there are still four of the five beneficiary houses that have been listed since 1985. They house a nursing school and practice rooms of the Alfried Krupp Hospital.
