GI Joe - The Reckoning

GI Joe - Secret Mission Cobra is a 2009 action film adaptation based on the " GI-Joe " toy franchise . The director took Stephen Sommers from a screenplay by Stuart Beattie . The film continued with GI Joe - Reckoning in 2013 .

action

In the near future, arms dealer James McCullen is developing a nanotechnology-based weapon that can destroy entire cities. His company MARS sells four warheads of this weapon to NATO , and the US Army is tasked with delivering them. Duke and Ripcord are supposed to secure the transport, but are attacked by the baroness, whom Duke identifies as his ex-fiancée Ana Lewis. Duke and Ripcord are saved by Scarlett, Snake Eyes and Heavy Duty. They take the two and the warheads to the headquarters of the Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity (GI JOE) in North Africa. There Duke and Ripcord meet General Hawk, who runs GI Joe and takes control of the storage of the warheads. Hawk only leaves them in the organization because Duke knows the Baroness.

McCullen uses the same nanotechnology to create resilient soldiers with the help of a doctor to secure the theft of the warheads so that he can create a new world order. While checking the warheads remotely, McCullen activates a transmitter and sends Storm Shadow along with the Baroness and Zartan to retrieve the warheads. After a fight, the three of them recover the warheads and bring them to Baron DeCobray, the baroness's husband. They force him to arm the warheads and fire a warhead at the Eiffel Tower to show the weapon’s destructive power. They are followed by the Joes, who cannot stop them. Only Duke manages to press the emergency stop button in time before the “nano-mites” contained in the weapon can destroy more than the Eiffel Tower, which can no longer be saved. Duke is captured and taken to McCullen's base under the Arctic .

The Joes locate and arrive at the base, while McCullen has the warheads mounted on missiles. Snake Eyes can launch a missile shortly after launch, allowing Ripcord to use a prototype aircraft to track the remaining two missiles that were launched towards Moscow and Washington. Scarlet and her group infiltrate the base while Heavy Duty leads an attack on Cobra forces. Meanwhile, Duke learns that Doctor Rex Lewis is the dead brother of Ana, who apparently died four years ago on a Duke-led mission. He was trapped in a bunker with Doctor Mindbender and survived. The Baroness then tries to save Duke from her brother and frees him. However, Doctor Rex can prevent the Baroness from doing so by using his nano-mites, with which he had the Baroness under his control for the past four years. When McCullen tries to kill Duke, the latter injures him and McCullen escapes with Rex in a getaway vehicle. Duke and the Baroness pursue the two while Rex initiates the base's self-destruct sequence. Meanwhile, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow meet. Snake Eyes stabs and apparently kills Storm Shadow.

Rex heals McCullen's burned face with nano-mites, baptizes him with the name "Destro" and assumes the identity of the Cobra Commander, whereupon they are caught shortly after by the Joes. The baroness is taken into protective custody on an aircraft carrier until the nano-mites have been removed from her body. Zartan infiltrates the White House under Rex's control by impersonating the US President during the crisis.

production

development

In 2003, Lorenzo di Bonaventura became interested in producing a film about advanced military technology, whereupon Brian Goldner , the head of Hasbro's toy department at the time, called him and suggested that the film be based on the GI Joe toy series . Goldner and Bonaventura had worked together previously and toys for films developed Bonaventura as chief executive officer of Warner Bros. produced. It took them three months to develop a plot and they eventually chose Michal B. Gordon as their scriptwriter because they liked his 300 script .

Bonaventura wanted to tell the story of certain characters and introduced the role of Rex in order to be able to depict the essence of Duke more profoundly. The name Rex was suggested by Hasbro. Originally, producer Don Murphy wanted to produce the GI Joe film, but when the 2003 Iraq War broke out, he found a film called GI Joe inappropriate and decided to produce Transformers instead , which was also based on a Hasbro toy line . Bonaventura thinks "that the Joes, and Duke in particular in the film, stand for something that I want to convey to a global audience."

In February 2005, Paul Lovett and David Elliot, who wrote Bonaventura's Four Brothers , rewrote Gordon's design. Skip Woods then rewrote the script again in March 2007 and added the role of Alex Mann, a character from the British " Action Man " toy series (which in turn was the British counterpart or an offshoot of the "GI Joe" series) . Bonaventura stated, “Unfortunately, our President [ George W. Bush ] has put us in an international position where it would be difficult to get a movie called GI Joe out . Adding a character to the team is fun. "

In August 2007, Paramount Pictures hired Stephen Sommers to direct the film after the film won over Paramount's CEO with a presentation. Sommers was inspired to do this after visiting Hasbro, Rhode Island and exploring the "GI Joe" universe. The project got more impetus after the film Transformers produced by Bonaventura . Sommers then signed as director, as the concept reminded him of James Bond and he saw an underwater battle in the story as a reference to Fireball . Stuart Beattie was hired to write a new screenplay for Sommers' film and Larry Hama, Marvel's writer, who helped develop the 1980 reinterpretation of the GI Joe series (which served as the template for the film) was hired as a creative consultant. He helped rid the plot of elements that fans would not have liked and made the plot similar to that of the comics he had written for many years. He also convinced the producers to cut out a comic scene at the end of the film in which Snake-Eyes speaks.

To the production before the strike 2007/08 of WGA to accelerate, John Lee Hancock, helped Brian Koppelman and David Levien different scenes when writing.

Goldner said that their inspiration was mainly Hama comics. The detailed background story also helped, since according to Sommers the film would otherwise have fallen behind schedule.

Filming

Filming began on February 11, 2008 in Los Angeles . Since Paramount needed a large studio to move production forward as quickly as possible, it was decided to shoot in Downey . The first two levels of the "GI-Joe" headquarters were recreated, as the remaining buildings were to be created as a special effect. In Downey, Destro's MARS base in the Arctic was also rebuilt, as well as various submarine interiors, including a SHARC.

In May 2008 production was relocated to the Barrandov film studios in the Czech Republic for a month . The crew took over large parts of Prague's old town . On April 26, during filming, seven people were slightly injured when a bus and several cars were rammed by an SUV due to braking problems. A second unit made recordings in Paris , Egypt , Tokyo , the Arctic and also under water.

The production designers molded the interior of Destro's submarine into a Handley Page Jetstream . Sommers mentioned that the chunky, immobile exoskeletons (which, for example, enable a "car chase with a guy without a car") made it difficult for the actors and therefore will only be seen on a reduced scale in possible sequels.

Bonaventura said US Army aid will be limited as many weapons are fictional. The filmmakers were also not allowed to use a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle (MRAP) because many of these types of vehicles were dispatched to the Middle East as quickly as possible , but filming was allowed at the National Training Center . Some commentators who discussed rehearsals and commercials noted superficial resemblance to the action movie parody Team America .

Trivia

  • Contrary to the original, Snake Eyes uses a katana (samurai sword) in the film and not, as in the original comic version, a ninjatō (a short sword that is not curved).
  • Many members and troops of the secret organization Cobra (including the Baroness) use so-called sonic cannons (Sonic and ultrasonic weapons, USW) in the film, which in reality already have some prototypes, but which do not yet have the firepower shown in the film .
  • The actors Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Brendan Fraser and Arnold Vosloo already played together in the film The Mummy and The Mummy Returns , with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje only starring in the latter.
  • The film opened in German cinemas on August 13, 2009.

Film music

The soundtrack was composed by Alan Silvestri , who then recorded it with a 90-piece symphony orchestra of the Hollywood Studio Symphony in the recording studios of Sony and 20th Century Fox . The soundtrack was released in Germany on July 31st. In the credits, a remix of the song Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas is played.

marketing

The toy manufacturer Hasbro , which owns the rights to the GI Joe brand , has been releasing the toy figures for the film since July 2009. While earlier "GI-Joe" toy series outside the USA were often not published at all or only under a different name, the characters for the film came on the market in many countries under the original title GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra , including Germany. To develop the toys, the actors in the film were scanned in 3D. The figures are held in the size 3¾ inches. In addition, 12-inch action figures are also to appear, as well as the first play set based on the team's headquarters since "GI-Joe" toys were introduced.

The American comic book publisher IDW Publishing published several comic mini-series on the film, including a comic adaptation of the film plot.

Electronic Arts also developed a video game sequel to the film under the same title.

With a budget of 175 million US dollars, US $ 150 million was raised in the US and US $ 302 million worldwide. The film reached # 1 on the opening weekend for $ 54.7 million.

Reviews

The film magazine Cinema said, “If you enjoyed Transformers , you should also enjoy this action orgy with toy role models. Everyone else should give preference to the Team America DVD. "

The lexicon of international films judged: “A movie about the Hasbro characters known from computer games, series episodes and comics as an exaggerated, loud and senseless orgy of pyrotechnics. Tiring duels on air, land and water are fought in bombastic parallel worlds with deadly high-tech hidden from civil society and only serve the lucrative business with violence in a patriotic form. "

Manohla Dargis said in the New York Times that "this expensive, dry nonsense" can never be panned by critics, "simply because the film has long since torn apart."

Nominations for the Golden Raspberry

The film was nominated several times for the awards of the Golden Raspberry ridicule :

continuation

The sequel GI Joe - The Reckoning was filmed in 2011. The cinema release was planned for the early summer of 2012, but was postponed to March 28, 2013.
